Malasadas are a delicious deep-fried doughnut-like pastry that originated in Portugal. The pastry was brought to Hawaiʻi by Portuguese immigrants in the late 19th century and quickly became a popular treat among the locals.

The story goes that in the late 1800s, Portuguese plantation workers of Madeira made malasadas to use up their butter and sugar before Lent, which was a time of fasting and abstinence. When the Portuguese immigrants came to Hawai‘i to work on the sugar cane plantations, they brought this tradition.

In Hawai‘i, malasadas became a staple at local bakeries and shops, particularly on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, and the start of Lent. Many bakeries and shops would offer fresh, hot malasadas on this day as a way to indulge before the period of fasting.

Today, malasadas are still beloved in Hawai'i, with bakeries and food trucks serving up their own versions of the pastry—often filled with various flavors, such as custard, haupia (coconut pudding), chocolate, and more. Be sure to grab a malasada when you pass by Tex Drive-In in Honoka‘a or from Manuela Malasada food truck at Puako Drive.

Malasadas have become such a beloved part of Hawai‘i's culinary scene that they are often included in local festivals and events. For example, the Hawai‘i Food and Wine Festival often features malasadas as a dessert option.

Part of their enduring popularity in Hawai‘i is their connection to the state's multicultural history—and is a testament to the lasting impact of Portuguese culture on the islands. Like many other local foods, Malasadas are the result of cultural exchange and adaptation, reflecting the diverse communities that have made Hawai‘i their home over the years.
